About Us
Ricky, the Dog of the Day
Name: Ricky
Age: Four years old
Gender: Male
Breed: Shih Tzu
Home: Lake Mathews, California, USA

I first heard about Ricky through my sister Dee, who was doing volunteer work for Inland Aids Project. She called me and said, "We have a little dog here whose owners died of AIDS. It is a really good little dog and needs a place to go now or it will end up in the pound." I told her to bring me the little dog and I would make sure it found a home and didn't end up in the pound. Ricky has been with me ever since.

The first thing that struck me when I met Ricky was a profound sense of grief and loss. He came in and curled up beside me and didn't move, he was nine months old but acted as if he was years older.

Ricky didn't know how to drink out of a bowl because he had spent his early puppyhood drinking from a glass and laying in hospital beds comforting people as they slowly died. Slowly he became less fearful of his water bowl and began to drink from it.

He slowly learned that when people you love leave you they will come back. In his puppyhood, when people left, they never returned. He has learned to play but continues to remain a comforter of people who are ill, hurting or profoundly sad. He knows exactly how to give people the love that they need. Ricky is more than a pet, he is my dearest friend.
