This
is Trixy the Wonderdog. She is probably a mixed breed, but looks
like a rather large Chihuahua (fifteen pounds). We got her back in 1994.
About one year after we got her she woke up in great pain. Of course the
vets offered us the choice of expensive back surgery or putting her to
sleep, AKA death. We chose to save her. After emergency surgery, she was
out of pain, but did not regain the use of her rear legs. Eventually we
found a K9 Cart and ordered it. It looks like a sulky from harness
racing and she gets along fine in it and loves to walk around with us
and our other two dogs. She can also get along without it quite well by
dragging her rear behind her. We only let her do this indoors and made
pants for her so that her underside doesn't get abrasions. She's been
doing great and doesn't seem to even notice that anything is different
about her. She's even the boss of the other two dogs, a Cocker and a big
Black Lab.
Realizing that she was always getting attention and making people smile,
I decided that we ought to share her with people who needed cheering up.
Through the Pasadena Humane Society we joined their Companion Animal
Program and began visiting a senior long term care facility. Every
month, Trixy and her 'sister' Holly, the Cocker Spaniel, visit and
brighten the day for all of the residents. One woman there is 108 years
old and loves them. She can hardly wait to see them. While it's hard for
us sometimes to see old people that way, it's made much easier by the
joy that the girls bring to them.
Even a paralyzed pet can still be a great pet. It's a little more work,
but the love you get in return is unbelievable. She's as happy as she's
ever been. I hope that you enjoyed her story. The photo shows Trixy and

working lights and a small tree at Xmas time.
