My
Pet of the Day and every day of the year and also my
youngest child is my German Shepherd Dog Sonny! Sonny turned three
years old this August and he is my perfect angel! My fiancé
Paul and I are the only people he likes though. Even though he was
socialized as a pup, he doesn't like others, including our other pets,
to get anywhere near his Mom and Dad! He is not a biter, but he is
very aggressive towards anyone who gets too close to us or those who
talk loudly and move too quickly around us! His bloodline is German
Police and his descendants were trained specifically for guard dogs,
so he certainly got it honestly I believe! His only job as far is he
is concerned is to protect us, the house, the yard, the fence, his
toys... anything that he thinks is "his" is very well
protected!!!! Luckily, a treat will help him tolerate our friends but
if you don't have a special treat for him and I don't tell him first
it is okay to eat that treat, then he believes that whomever is in
"his territory" is food!! No one will believe me
though when I tell them he truly is just a very large baby and he
honestly believes he is our child!
Whatever we do, he does too...that includes lying on the couch to
watch TV and nap, with his favorite pillow no less, and our bed and
my pillow is also his too! The thing I find the sweetest about Sonny is
he also thinks he is a "lap dog!" At close to 120 pounds, I
think or possibly he weighs even more now (this dog is not fat in any
way shape or form!)... we have not been able to weigh him for some
time now. He is huge and muscular and his favorite place is in my
lap!!!! He literally will try to climb into my lap and when that
doesn't work he will lay down on top of me!!! He is bigger than I am
and it is a sight to see this very large dog crying and begging like a
baby to sit in his Mama's lap!!! In his mind he thinks he is still a
little puppy!!! The funniest thing is that he will be oh so very
careful not to step on me or hurt me in any way and even with his
large frame he has never broken anything inside the house and seems to
maneuver on tiptoes around objects in the house he could damage! I
have never before had such a wonderful, intelligent and loving pet as
Sonny and I am so glad to have a pet as special as he is! I have no
children and he truly is my "Son" and my
"Sunshine"...and that is how he got his name...but he is
also my best friend!! His unconditional love and devotion towards me
is something that is so special I can't even truly describe it!!
Where we live just off the coast of North Carolina we will usually
sustain at least two to three hurricanes per year and of course he is in the
house with me during this time! He will also try to "herd"
me into what he feels is the safest place in the house and protect
me from the storm! I honestly don't know what I would do without my
protector and I am thankful for every day I have had with him since he
came into my life especially on the nights when I am alone he seems to
understand that I don't feel quite safe and he will lay at the middle
door within sight of the other doors and check all of them if he hears
any sounds outside at all!! I sleep soundly knowing he is "on

His personality just shines through and I could go on and on forever
about how wonderful he is!
