Jesse
was found in the winter of 1999 curled into a tiny white ball on
a front porch hiding from a snowstorm. She was no more than 4-6 weeks
old and no one is really sure how she arrived in our lives. She went
to live with my brother and his family for nine months until she
aggravated my nephew's asthma and they could no longer keep her. We
think she's got a little bit of yellow Lab, little bit of mutt (some
think with Greyhound, Doberman, Shepherd, or even Collie).
Home to me she came.
Although Jesse went from a white puppy with a black nose to a golden
color with a pink nose, she thankfully is outgrowing her "puppy"
anxieties. She has chewed her fair share of trash, plastic bags,
furniture, shoes, purses, blinds, clothing, firewood, plants, picture
frames and even potpourri. Despite the chaos, she is a terrific guard
dog and will greet everyone at the front door with craze and
enthusiasm.
Like all dogs, Jesse enjoys playing outside. I joke that she is
actually part gazelle because she runs so fast or part deer because she
actually prances. The pup has no fears of running through shrubbery and
never looses stamina. Rumor has it she has gone swimming in the creeks,
but I have yet to seen it!
On command, Jesse can sit, give paw, sit pretty, take a bow, lay down,
roll-over, wag her tail and speak. The speaking became a little out of
control when she was determined to get the last word or interrupt you
conversations (needless to say, we don't tell her to speak anymore).
Does she know she is a dog or does she think she is human?
When she looks at me with trusting eyes and smiles and hums as she is
pet, I know she is very happy. Every night when she crawls up to me and
lays her head up on my leg, she takes a deep sigh and drifts off to
sleep, I am thankful to have her in my life.
