Scout
is our beautiful and energetic Yellow Labrador Retriever. She
likes to chew tennis balls and socks, fetch sticks (but not return
them!), and steal "people food" from right under our noses. (When she
was about eight months old, she ate an entire dozen of chocolate-chip
cookies, fresh from the oven, by jumping up and resting her front paws
on the countertop. Luckily she didn't get enough of the chocolate to
hurt her!) Her favorite place to be is curled up on her doggy-bed (or
in somebody's lap!) while the family sits and watches TV at night.
Scout's real name is Jean Louise. You might recognize the name and
nickname from Harper Lee's novel To Kill A Mockingbird, and if you're
familiar with the story, you will be amused to know that we dressed her
up as a HAM for her first Halloween! Scout really is a ham sometimes,
in that she adds a little humor to every day with her playful
personality. Being a typical lab, she will eat anything. She's chewed
up probably hundreds of dollars in pillows, eyeglasses, candles, bedroom
slippers, and especially socks. She figured out how to sneak into the
laundry room and grab one, then run around the house with the sock until
somebody chases her. The cutest part is the mischievous look on her
face while she's hiding under the table or as she darts away just as you
get close, and then her innocent expression when she's being scolded.
She definitely has a human-like personality!
Scout, being the "baby" in the family (my sisters and I are all in high
school or college), is hopelessly spoiled. When someone is in her spot
on the couch, she looks up with her pleading puppy-dog eyes and we move
every time. She sleeps under my parents' bed at night, and then every
morning when one of them gets up for work, Scout hops up to take over
the spot. She always sits beside the table during meals, and when it's
been awhile since something's been dropped, she nudges her nose under
our arms, making sure we haven't forgotten about her! She gets special
doggy treats on her birthday and holidays, and at Christmas we hang her
stocking next to ours on the mantle. She's so adorable, and she's so
much like a little sister that it's impossible not to treat her like one
of the family!
