My
fiance brought this big black Labrador home to me on Christmas Eve in
1998. He rescued him from the Humane Society in Newark, NJ. I had
wanted a baby yellow lab for years, so when the door bell rang on
Christmas Eve and I was greeted by an overly anxious big black 70-pound
monster - frankly, I was not too excited. I was scared actually. The poor
dog just wanted to be around people, but was jumping all over me!
Something I was not used to ... yet. When my fiance saw how friendly he
was, there was no way he could take a puppy and not rescue this "bigger
puppy". (At one year old he was definitely still a puppy in all his
actions!)
He was filthy, and I insisted he take a bath before I got
too close- and so we decided to give it a try the first night! We braced
ourselves for a struggle, but the dog jumped right in the bath tub and
sat still for us. I think it was then that i decided he was a keeper!
over the next couple of weeks, I grew very attached to him, and him to
us. We tried to think of names, but nothing was coming to mind. Of course
people had all sorts of common names like "Blackie" or "Midnight".. but
we wanted something that really fit him. Without a name, I kept
referencing him as "our new friend". For example, I'd say "Honey, did
you feed our new friend?"..."Honey, did you walk our new friend?"
Eventually I came to think of him as only that- "our new friend". Hence-
one day it clicked that we should name him Friend. People have mixed
reactions to that name, but we love it. People often ask us, "why call
him Friend?". My father- in law -to- be always says, "Because he's man's
best dog!" That's my favorite answer!
Friend is supposedly a pure-bred, but we have no papers. The vet thinks
he is full.. but he is very tall and thin with a long face. He could be
a field lab, rather than the English variety. I also think it's possible
he may be mixed with a Golden Retriever, as his features are very
lab-like, but his hair tends to be a bit too long for a pure lab. He
also has a big black birthmark on his tongue.- which people have varying
opinions on. Some say that is a shepherd trait.. which might explain his
thin face?? Whatever he is, he is loved! he is our baby for sure. The
three of us live in NJ together and we couldn't be happier. We recently
bought a home with an acre of land for Friend to run on! Small property
was not an option when we were looking. That's how important our dog is!
Friend is four years old now, and one spoiled dog. He loves to make new
friends- he just can't get enough of people. He is truly everyone's
"Friend". Here are some pictures of him! I don't know how you can
choose any pet over any other since we all think our own pets are the
best!
