This
is Danielle, a toy poodle. Dani was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1996.
In July one of our best friends, Cathy, retired to Arizona with her two
beautiful blue tabby cats. Lots of the Arizona dogs wear these visors to
protect their eyes from the intense sun. Our friend immediately thought
that Dani needed a visor and mailed one to us (addressed to Dani Dog, of
course). Of course, once we had the visor, we had to try out our friend
Heidi's pool! Dani had never been swimming, but she was a natural on the
float and graduated to swimming right away. She is nowhere near as
graceful as Boomer and Tanner - the giant yellow labs that live there
and swim every day - but she is practicing!
Dani is special because she is so loving and super smart. It could be
the two baby carrots she eats every day. Or maybe it is because I talk
to her all the time like she is human. (I know she understands me!) When
I brought Dani home in January of 1997, she was about a pound and a half
and was mostly blackish brown with some cool red streaks. She is around
ten pounds now. Her coloring changes a little through the year, but I
always get comments about her uncommon color for a poodle. Dani's mom,
Maggie, was black and her dad, Bojangles, was reddish champagne.
Dani has known how to sit back and catch a ball since she was about four
months old. Back then, the little latex ball seemed almost as big as her
head! But she's been obsessed with daily "catch" games ever since! At
about six months, the neighbors taught her how to sit and "say hello"
(extend a paw). She learned that one fast because her Sheltie boyfriend,
Shelby, gave great examples!
Dani can "count" her most special or favorite toys - - and there are
many - - she goes around nudging each with her nose. If one is missing,
she will not rest (or stop telling me!) until it is found. She know
family and friends by name and can go to the right person when told. She
takes the stairs two-at-a-time and moves like a bullet to greet Grandmas
& Grandpa when we go visiting.
Dani can show a little jealous streak - - especially when I am on the
phone. She hides a ball under the couch to get my attention. She jumps
like she is on a spring when I get home from work. What a great greeting
after work! Dani can dance on her back legs for a treat or a toy or just
to stand taller to glimpse a walker two blocks away.
Her dark brown eyes are very expressive and she listens intently when
humans talk to her. Dani gives tons of kisses and hugs and she loves to
have her back knees scratched! She brings me tons of smiles... Dani
is terribly spoiled, but she deserves it!
