Kruzer, the Dog of the Day
Name: Kruzer
Age: Twelve years old
Gender: Male Breed: Sheltie, Labrador mix
Home: Crown Point, Indiana, USA

This is our dog Kruzer. Believe it or not he's twelve years old! You wouldn't know it from his actions. He is more than just a pet, he's a member of the family. My wife and I got him from a local animal hospital at about five months old. We fell in love with him right away. He is one of the most caring and intelligent animals I've ever known, and so loyal.

Kruzer is part Shetland Sheepdog, and it's thought that he's part black Labrador (The vet wasn't sure). We've never had to leash train him. When we let him out, he comes right back to the door. He is truly the nosiest neighbor around. We live on a hill, so his day is made if the drapes for the balcony are open so he can see what's going on. I can have him outside in front of the garage while I'm working. If someone walks by his ears will perk, but he just lays in his spot as content as can be never moving.

He is, as I had said, very intelligent also. A few years ago I had a bad flu bug. He is as most dogs, if you're sick, he's right there. We have a split level house and at the time we had the living room downstairs. I couldn't get out of bed and my wife couldn't hear me. I told Kruzer to "go get mommy." He went to the top of the stairs and wouldn't stop barking until she came upstairs to me. This could be a fluke, but no. Two weeks later my wife got the flu bug and the rolls were reversed. I had told her what he had done. She did the same thing and he went to the top of the stairs and kept barking until I came up to her.

He is also too funny. When we were first married we were living in a trailer. One night I woke up at about 2:00 in the morning and I heard something strange. Being groggy I couldn't quite figure out what it was. I turned to my wife to see if she heard it and I just about burst out laughing. What I heard was the dog. He was between us, under the covers up to his chest, head out, on his back with his nose in the air snoring away!

I have had dogs in the past, but Kruzer has touched our lives by far the most.
