Piper
came into my life at a time when I felt my world had ended. My
marriage of ten years had just fallen apart, I was laid off from my job,
and my father was diagnosed with lymphoma. I was one of the saddest,
loneliest people you can imagine. I rarely left the house and had
pulled away from all of my friends.
I was scanning the newspaper one day and saw a "free dog" ad. It was a
Wire-Haired Fox Terrier! I couldn't believe it because my heart dog,
Larry, was 1/2 WFT and I had always wanted another one. Wouldn't you
know it? When I called to check on Piper, he had already been placed in
a home. I was heartbroken, but decided to leave my number just in case
it didn't work out with his new owners.
I had almost given up, when about two weeks later Piper's "grandmother"
called me to see if I was still interested. Piper's new owners decided
not to keep him because he wanted to lick their new skin-baby in the face.
Little did I know how significant this little dog would become in my
life. This little boy, (who looked like a little stuffed lamb), became
my reason to get out of bed each day. When I wanted to lie there in bed
and wallow in my depression, two little paws would appear on the edge of
the bed. One of those little paws would "poke" at me until I would get
up and go outside for a walk.
When I would cry, there was a little narrow tongue licking away my tears
or this funny, little clown sitting up on his haunches "begging" and
"talking" in only the way Piper can talk. I never knew what he was
begging for, but I do know it always made me smile.
Piper saved my life, I truly believe that. He's my hero, my friend, my
child and I love him more than words can say. We were meant to be.
