Hello,
this is Casey. He turned eleven years old this October. I got him when
he was five years old. His former owner couldn't deal with Casey's very
severe and sometimes fatal (for the cat) disliking of the feline
species. He ended up at the pound. They even had his picture in the
paper in an attempt to find him a home, but being a five-year-old, 145-pound
German Shepherd who didn't like cats certainly was not to his advantage.
I was friends with the animal control officer so with his help I
contacted the previous owner to see if he was ok with children, and he
said" He's great as long as you're not a cat!" So, I gave it a try and
he's been the best thing that's ever happened to my family. Casey is
truly a loyal companion. I was happy to have saved his life, but I had
no idea that he would end up the best friend I've ever had.
Casey has the sweetest personality going. He is very affectionate. He
loves to be brushed every day, and believe me he needs to be (German
Shepherds shed a lot). He loves to play ball and Frisbee. He will get
the ball in his mouth and make you chase him around the pool or if in
the house, the kitchen table. Of course you have to pretend you can't
catch him. He's getting older though and doesn't have as much energy
anymore. Also, being as big as he is it makes it difficult on his hind
legs. He used to be my running companion, now we walk. He loves to walk
down to a nearby stream and go in the water. He also loves to go to the
beach with me, although I can't go in the water much myself because he
barks at the waves. I think, he thinks, I'm going to get hurt by. He is
very protective of me and the children. He follows me where ever I go.
Sometimes I feel bad because when we're outside and I'm working in the
yard he will lie down near me and if I move he'll get up and move also.
I tell him "Casey I'm not going far, or, I'll be right back." But he
just can't let me out of his sight. Winters are getting tough on him,
but I've never seen a dog love the snow so much. He lays in it, rolls in
it, and eats it. I think the cold feels good on his legs. He is very
smart and obedient. I had heard he was previously owned by a police
officer. His nicknames are Snow Doggie and Barky. His barking can get
quite annoying but he's just doing his job. Although you would think at
his age he would realize thunder will not hurt him! It's pretty amusing
watching a 145-pound dog trying to hide! Anyway, that's my Casey, truly a
woman's best friend.
