This
is our wonderful dog, Checkers, a.k.a. Pigboy, Checkies, Pete,
Stinky, etc. He'll answer to them all-especially if a treat is
involved. Checkers is more than just a pet; he is part of the family.
Here he is enjoying a snowfall in his sweater that makes him look like
"armadillo dog."
Checkers has overcome many obstacles in his life. We rescued him from a
farm in Ohio where they called him "U.D." (ugly dog because of the white
on his chest) and brought him back to Pennsylvania to live with us.
At three years of age Checkers had three herniated disks; his surgeon thought
he'd never walk again. After the surgery, I took time off from work,
then he accompanied me to work every day for more than a month. He sat
in his little red wagon behind my desk. Checkies became the hit of the
office and looked forward to everyone stopping by with treats. My
friend's sister kept her pool open through October that year so that we
could bring Checks over to her house to do hydrotherapy. With all the
love, attention and therapy, he regained the use of his hind legs. I am
grateful to Dr. Pardo for his surgery skills, and to Carole for letting
us bring Pigboy over for therapy.
Nine years later, he is doing well; his right hind leg will sometimes
give out on him. Even with his slight handicap, he is more than able
to scope out the neighbors' in search of treats. But if he doesn't come
back, all I need do is start to count ...1 ...2 ... by 2 he is slinking
back home. I've never gotten to 3!
Checkies is momma's cuddle boy and daddy's play baby. We will always
love him!
