This
is Tonka, my wonderful Shiba Inu. I thought my older dog,
Morrison, could use a little brother but what we didn't expect was that
this little red, twelve week old dog would come into our house and
immediately rule the roost! I had done my research on Shibas, but
nothing I read could have prepared me for this precious little guy.
Shibas are certainly unique, from their Shiba "dance," to the way they
eat, the "talking" they do and of course always having to be the center
of attention. The first year or so was a little rough, but once he
realized that his mom was okay, we became friends and now I wouldn't
trade him for anything in the world! He is certainly a snuggler and
never fails to look into my eyes and give me one of his quick little kisses.
This picture was taken on one of our hikes. We hike every weekend,
off-leash, and this is what he likes to do best - scale boulders and
pose for the camera! Not a weekend goes by where someone doesn't say,
"Oh he's so cute, what kind of dog is he?" or "he looks like a little
fox!" Even people that know the breed are usually shocked by the fact
that he runs freely. And while he may look like a fox, his nicknames
are Little Bear and Tonka Bear because when he "talks" he sounds like a
bear cub. And when he howls he sits back and arches his head to the sky
which makes you think he's a baby coyote! The three of us howl regularly
and my motto has always been, "a family that howls together, stays together!"
