Zoey
is my fourth Elkhound and she has the same nature all the others
had. They are really hyper and it never crossed my mind to do Therapet
work with them, as they are so very hyper.
However, I was in hospital getting a knee replaced and on my return for a
second replacement, my sister said you'll be going to take your girl for
a walk. This was on the first day when we were just getting tests. I
said that I now had a young dog as the last had died, so Zoey was
invited into the hospital.
Sister went with her up the ward and I was at a loss - this was not my
dog so laid back snuggling up to patients etc. It was like someone had
switched the hyper off.
After I was healed up I joined Canine Concern Scotland Trust who run the
Therapet scheme. And Zoey has been a Therapet ever since.
She was one of the dogs that won the Queens Golden Jubilee award on
2003 that same year she was voted 2nd place in Therapet of the year out
of over 600 dogs.
Zoey lives with me 24/7 eats the same as me, mince, fish, soup,
curry, vegetable salad, She enjoys her vegetables raw or cooked, also enjoys all
fruit - apples, cherries, grapes, oranges, melons pears, bananas, just
all fruit and vegetables, just like my previous Elkhounds did.
Zoey is now eight and a half and the homes that she visits with elderly
and handicapped are joining together to put her forward again this year
for Therapet of the Year as they are determined she should have first
place. Zoey has been in the different organizations news reports and in
the press on many occasions regarding her Therapet work, the Queens award etc. Last
year, it was because one of the homes called the press to tell them they
and the other homes were holding a birthday party for her. She usually
has at least three parties, and gets invited to the residents' ones as well.
She dresses up for various occasions, Elkhound express, to deliver cards
at birthdays, and Xmas Norse moosehound, and a witch for Halloween.
