Our
rescue dog, Mia, is very smart. Here's one of many ways in which she
is special: She invented a game for us after she learned to find a
rawhide bone that we hid from her in the house. One night she took off
with the bone, returned several minutes later without it, and then sat
staring at me expectedly. I finally realized that she had hidden the
bone and expected me to go find it. Sure enough, after I got up to look
for it, she waited as long as she could stand - and then went to get it
before I could uncover it. This is now a game we have to play several
times a week.
We were Mia's third home. She, her mother, and siblings were first
abandoned by the side of a highway. Her second owner, a friend of ours,
was unable to keep her because of some family issues. So it took her a
bit of time to trust us and to become socialized. Now, Mia has become
very affectionate and very popular in our neighborhood. She's very
gentle and playful with some of the tiny canines in the area.
As I write this, she has arrived to tell me it's time for her walk. So
I need to type fast. Like a lot of dogs, she understands many words -
'dog park' is one of them. So we have to spell certain terms or she
expects immediate action. She doesn't do a lot of tricks, but she has
learned 'high fives' with both paws in the air.
We're very happy to have her after having been long-time dog parents for
most of our marriage. We had to put our last beloved dog, Maggie, to
sleep after more than thirteen years of fun and frolic. We then took a very
long time out until Mia entered our lives. We're happy to have done so
in spite of dog fur tumbleweeds that we had been missing for a very long time.
