Hello
- I'd like to nominate our dog, Sarge, because he is a 'gentle
giant' of a dog who makes everyone smile. He is very large, friendly and
gentle - everyone loves him. I bring him to work with me occasionally and
he lifts everyone's spirits and improves morale - just look at him.
Sarge is a large 'gentle ben' of a dog and a very good 'nanny type' For
example, when my cousins young children (ages four and six), who are
typical city kids came to visit, they were initially frightened of Sarge
because of his size. He literally looked each of them in the face. Sarge
seemed to sense this and lied down in front of them. He seems to smile
and wagged his tail gently in a very friendly manner. Within five to ten
minutes the kids were hugging him and lying with him on the ground. They
all played very well together afterwards, running through paths in the
woods behind our house and playing fetch with the ball etc. Sarge really
seemed to enjoy them. He loves people and our friends dogs when they come
to visit.
At roughly 120 pounds, he likes to consider himself a lap dog. My older
boys (thirteen and seventeen) will lie with him on our couch. I have more
pictures, if you'd like to see this. He is also very affectionate and
attentive - he follows me around the house and lies at my feet most of
the time.
He is true to his breed and instincts as he travels the perimeter of our
house/land (about 20+ acres) barking to ward off any danger. Typically
this breed guards' sheep, but Sarge seems to consider our family as his
'sheep.'
As far as tricks, he has the basics - sit, lie down, and we're working on
'heel' which is coming along pretty well. He does have some favorite
games and toys. He will go and get his rope toy and bring it to you.
He'll shake his head and gently back away if you reach for it, because he
wants you to chase him. When you do chase him and reach for the rope, he
has a favorite 'spin' move. This is very funny to see. He'll run ahead of
you and stop (facing away from you) and he'll listen to hear which side
you are coming up on, then he quickly bends down and backward and spins
to the other direction. We laugh and he seems to be so proud of himself
for 'tricking' us.
Anyway, we think he's very special.
I think he'd also be a perfect dog to visit nursing home residents, which
we're planning to look into.
