I've
known Ruby since she was about three months old, and let me tell
you, she's had a rough life. My brother and his wife brought her home
with two other dogs who had belonged to his wife's mother. Well, the two
other dogs were mother and daughter and did not like having an outsider
dog, even if she was unbelievably cute and cuddly. The first time they
tore into her, neither my brother nor his wife were home. She spent the
entire day laying in the middle of the yard, torn up and bleeding. One
of the neighbors contacted my father and I rushed over to her aid. I
cleaned her up and took her inside where she stayed until she healed a
few weeks later. Then my brother put her back in the yard, where she was
yet again attacked. During all of this I was moving around quite a bit
and didn't get to see Ruby as often as I would like and trusted my
brother that she was getting the care and love she deserved. After the
third attack, I was livid. Ruby's jaw was broken and healed wrong, her
little face was slightly disfigured, and her bottom right teeth never
came in. She was terrified of the world. My brother decided to get rid
of one of the dogs that had hurt Ruby, but kept the older one. Things
got a little better for her, but she never seemed happy.
In January of 2007 I lost my beloved cat, Reo. I was heartbroken and due
to his illness short on funds, I returned home to New Mexico, where Ruby
was just waiting to be rescued. My broken heart and her broken spirit
called to each other. One day, I went to my brother's house and told him
that I needed Ruby. She came home with me that night and she's stayed
with my ever since. It's been about three months now. Ruby, though over
a year old, is finally getting to have a puppy-hood. She's spontaneous,
carefree and loves to go for car rides. She sleeps with me, has been to
the vet twice (once for kennel cough, once for vaccinations) and is
getting healthier every day. I'm slowly introducing her to more dogs,
and she's learning that they won't attack her. She recently met my good
friend's four-year-old dog and they hit it off. She now has a best
friend, a loving mommy and a safe home.
The best part is, Ruby is helping heal me. No one can ever replace my
cat, but Miss Ruby has warmed my heart and brought me happiness when I
needed it most. She's always smiling (the vet says it's because her jaw
is mis-aligned, but I think she does it because she is finally in a
forever home. She's learning to walk on a leash, to take baths and not
to hide her food until no one is around. She's gotten a second chance at
life and has left behind her shell. I've gotten a beautiful baby to love
and a loyal companion for comfort. Who could ask for more?
