Mae
is about three years old and came to us from a rescue organization. Mae
had a rough start in her life and according to the vet, still carries
around several buck shot pellets in her hind quarters. You would never
know that this love bug had been hurt by people. She just can't get
enough attention and cuddling! Mae loves to play with her 'brother'
(another rescue dog) as well as go for rides in the car.
Mae is a typical girl - she loves her food! But she has found that
chasing squirrels and playing tug-o-war with her toys can be an equally
fun past time. Mae has learned to jump into our laps just like her
'brother' does too. 60 pound dogs are quite a lap full! But we wouldn't
have it any other way.
We have always had male Staffs (Am. Staffordshire Terriers) but never a
female nor a 'pair' either. Mae's 'brother' Strak was our first rescue
Staff and our introduction to how horribly this breed fairs in shelters.
When Strak settled into our home and hearts, we then began looking at
possible females for joining us here. Strak met a few lovely girls, but
we didn't find a fit until Mae.
Mae first caught our eye with her darling patch and beautiful red and
white contrasting coat. We emailed with her foster mom to find how Mae
was doing with the foster home's other 2 dogs. It turned out that Mae
was fine with dogs, but she feared small children so her chances of
adoption had become almost nil. As we had no children, or grandchildren
plus lived in a very rural setting, the child issue was not a major
problem for us. Mae seems to have gotten over this now, although we
continue to error on the side of safety for all involved.
Strak and Mae became instant buddies! They are not only equally matched
in size, they both love to play and are complementary opposites in
personalities - Strak is more reserved and Mae a go-go goofy gal! Mae is
the sweetest of girls and sits nicely plus gives kisses to those who
meet her. She and Strak are excellent reps of this breed, having
captured the hearts of many who have met them.
Mae loves to run. Even the buck shot that remains in her hind quarters
doesn't slow her down as she zips around our fenced bit of wilderness.
Mae never tires of sniffing all the brush and darting this way and that
as she checks out any movement by bird, lizard or even shadows. If
brother Strak finds something first, Mae dives right into whatever 'it'
is and poor Strak is left as an observer to Mae! Mae loved to fetch a
ball, but early arthritis in a joint hurts this even though Mae would
continue in spite of this. Her newest trick is to bring a stick back
after each walk around the property. Her contribution to our firewood is
appreciated.
