Hello,
my name is Checkers and I am an eleven-year-old Beagle. Today is a very
special day for me. It is my human mom's 50th birthday. I love her so
much because she has made my life so special. When I was just a puppy
she came to look at me with all of my brothers and sisters, I walked
over and crawled right up into her lap. We fell in love instantly. I
knew she was the mom for me and I have been so happy ever since. Every
day when my mom gets home from work I like to bay very loudly so that
she knows I am happy. Sometimes I run around the back of the house to
the driveway because I know she will open the door for me and let me go
for a short car ride into the garage. Other days I just wait at the
kitchen door until it opens, then I get a shoe from outside the door or
a baby from my toy basket and happily run and hide it. After I hide my
loot, I always get a biscuit. I love biscuits. My mom talks to me all
the time. When she talks to me I look at her with my big brown eyes and
tilt my head back and forth so she knows I am listening. I understand
the important words like walk, ride, park, dinner, breakfast and
biscuit. Did I mention I love biscuits?
Every night I get to go for a walk on the golf course. I love to sniff
the ground and stick my tail straight up in the air. On the weekends I
get to go on special outings in the car. I always get to sit in the
front seat. When other humans go with us, they have to sit in the back
because I am so special. I love my outings. I get to go to all kinds of
special parks where I enjoy smelling new smells and hiking all of the
pretty trails. This picture was taken of me at one of my favorite parks.
Even though the other humans in my family tell her it is a bad idea, my
mom always lets me do the dishes. I sometimes get to be the taste tester
when she is cooking too.
During the day I like to sleep in the royal beagle chair in our living
room or outside on the big fluffy patio chair with my cat sister Callie.
At night after my walk and after following my mom around while she does
her chores, I get to sleep under the covers. I like to sleep right
beside my mom and lean against her. I crawl head first into the covers,
turn around, and climb back up to put my head on the pillow. This summer
my family was very worried because I was very sick. I could only sit
around the house and did not have any energy to go for my walks that I
love so much. I wouldn't eat anything except for chicken and I had to
have a blood transfusion from a Labrador Retriever because my blood
count was so low. Now I am doing much better, and I am so happy that I
have more time to bring joy to my entire family. I have had a great
life, and I know my mom has found great joy having me as a dog. She is
always talking about how very precious I am and how much she loves me. I
want her to know that I love her too. Happy birthday mom!
