Dixie, the Dog of the Day
Name: Dixie
Age: Three years old
Gender: Female Breed: Rough Collie
Home: Cookeville, Tennessee, USA

Hi. My name is Dixie and I am three years old. Although I am a purebred Rough Collie, I ended up in rescue and my forever family adopted me when I was eleven months old. I deserve to be "Dog of the Day" because I am surviving a horrible disease known as Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). A short explanation would be that my pancreas atrophied to the point where I cannot create the digestive enzymes needed to absorb nutrients from my food. I was getting really skinny when the vet figured out what was wrong. My "mom" wouldn't give up on me. For the rest of my life I'll need enzymes put on my food to help it to "pre-digest" so that I can get the needed nutrients from it.

But my mom and dad are devoted to helping me be as healthy as possible and now I weigh what I should and feel really good. If you'd like to read more about my disease and if you want to help, just go to EPI 4 Dogs. The vets are researching this trying their best to find out what causes it so that fewer dogs have to suffer - always a good thing!

On a lighter note, I am one crazy collie! I love to run and play with my brother Harley, who is a year younger than I am and he is a Golden Retriever. I like to steal his tennis ball, and my family thinks I am a real clown. They like to show my picture from the day I fell asleep with Harley's tennis ball in my mouth and he didn't know what to do until I woke up! They say I'm really good at communicating with them, and they are always making jokes about me telling them that "Timmy is in the well," whatever that means!

From Mom: I don't know what we'd do without our sweet and crazy Dixie. She thinks she is just the right size to be a lap dog... and she is! I am so thankful that we are the ones who adopted her so that we could help her through her disease and stay on top of it.
