We'd
like to introduce our "Crown Prince" Carlos as Dog of the Day. Carlos
is a pure bred Shih Tzu who turned three on Halloween (trick or treat!).
We've always had a dog in our family, ranging from a pure mutt, to two
purebred Champagne American Cocker Spaniels. We thought each of these dogs
were the best ever, until Carlos came along, that is. We weren't expecting
to buy a new puppy (from a registered breeder), just going there to "look
them over." Oh sure. Carlos was one of nine puppies from two litters and
with nine puppies tearing around, the cleanup was considerable. He'd just
had his bath and a haircut and was still on the grooming table. I didn't
want to pick him up because I knew I'd be lost, but the breeder just said
"oh for heaven's sake" and plopped him into my arms. That did it.
What we didn't realize was just how smart this breed is. He was 2 1/2
months old when we brought him home, and when I was getting his dinner
ready the first night, I automatically told him to sit without thinking
about it. He sat! So I tried giving him a treat and told him "gently now".
Well I needn't have told him to be gentle - he wouldn't even close his
mouth until I took my fingers away! When the freezer opened, he was right
up there looking for something good. When I asked the breeder how she
found time for the training, she looked at me like I was crazy and asked
"what training"!!
He's become quite the social guy with several girlfriends from the doggy
park. One day the mail lady was delivering the mail to my husband's
office, saw Carlos there and said "Carlos! What are you doing here?! We
didn't know her at all, but she knew Carlos from the doggy park. This
happens quite frequently with different people. He recently helped out
when one of his brothers found a hole in their back fence and decided to
take off. We took him along thinking that his brother would come to him.
That didn't happen, but Carlos was more than happy to be running along the
trail.
He's the love of our life and we hope to have him for a very long time...
