This
is our baby Atos (Hajduk Atos Von Der Accani), he will turn two years old
tomorrow! He is a phenomenal dog. My husband and I were dog-less for a year,
after losing our miniature schnauzer Tessa. Then we decided that things were
too boring, too clean, not chewed up enough, we had too much time on our
hands, we had extra money to spend every month, too much freedom - so we got a
big dog.
Atos came to us when he was nine weeks old. We picked him up a day before
Christmas, and because the weather was bad, we could not drive all the way up
to the breeder's house so she was kind enough to meet us half way, at a truck
stop in Hermiston, Oregon. So when people ask us where we got our dog, we tell
them: at the Pilot truck stop in Hermiston. In reality, we were blessed to
find Atos' breeder, who is one of the kindest people we have ever met. Atos'
litter is the product of a Serbian mother and a German father. The pups were
raised in the breeders home and they were the clearly well adjusted and
socialized. We were very lucky to find him. There is one picture of him with
his three brothers (he is on the far right, with orange collar). I love that
picture. (His brothers are named Bill, Johnny, and Todd.)
Now, Atos is quite the character. He is a high drive dog, who has spent every
week since he was four months old in obedience training classes. We find that the
mental stimulation is very good for our baby and he is eager to work. He
enjoys the finer things in life, like being spoiled. We always joke with our
friends that it has taken a village to raise Atos. Besides mommy and daddy,
grandma comes every day to see Atos while we work. His favorite person is our
eleven year old neighbor, who comes and plays with him regularly. We have also
been back to the breeder for a little "tune up" session. Another source of
support has been our wonderful dog trainer. Well, we don't have kids yet, so
we invested all of our free time in this baby.
Atos is a very loving dog, who is very expressive and communicative. He is
very protective and he adores children, his favorites are between the age of one
and three. He gives kisses freely, but does so on command as well: Kiss kiss are
the magic words. He loves to play with interactive toys like the cube, which
we fill up with treats. In fact, when he wants to play with that toy (which is
about three to four times a day) he will bring it over and bark at it until it is
properly stocked for him to enjoy. He has lots of great friends, like Joey,
Cocoa, Gibby and Tango. He scares a lot of people, because he looks a bit
serious. His mission in life is to enjoy a good night's sleep in our bed, an
aspiration in which he has failed thus far. He also does not beg at the table.
He eats a raw diet. His coat is like velvet. He loves water, but does not
swim. He wades for hours. When we are driving, he drives himself nuts trying
to figure out where we are going. He enjoys hiking, guarding the back yard and
(still) stealing shoes.
He is a true Doberman, a loyal family pet who is very protective. I always
feel safe when I am with him. One of the things he does that is my favorite is this:
when I get home from work he follows me upstairs when I change my
clothes, then from the bedroom to the bathroom, to the closet, back to the bedroom
and he waits until I have changed my clothes. Than he waits by the stairs to
make sure I am going to be going down, too. It is all very cute, because he
has a super goofy look on his face the entire time.
Oh and he has his own blog, Trifunovici.
