Carbon
is my everyday hero. He was not trained to be a therapy dog, but he
became one by instinct. And, let me say that no one could predict two years ago,
including myself, that he could be so useful and important.
I am diabetic and need insulin shots four times a day. Carbon came into my
life when he was three months old. Unlike my others poodles that I had, he was
very destructive. He stole my slippers, chewed the carpet and unrolled the
toilet paper. In fact, he was a puppy who needed directions. That is why I
went to training with him and soon notice progress in his behavior.
I had confirmation that I was in presence of a dog out of the ordinary the
night he woke me up at 3 am. I thought that he wanted to go outside to do his
business, but when I walked toward the backdoor, he refused to move. Suddenly I
felt very week and realized that I was in a hypoglycemic state and needed
sugar very badly. As soon as I took care of myself, he went back to sleep!
Another time, when we were going for a walk at the baseball park, he suddenly turned
around and pulled me back to our house. I thought that he may have smell a
big dog and was intimidated by it. But when I saw my house, I felt very week
and realized once again that he has detected my scent changing because of a drop in
my sugar level. He brought me back and my husband was able to see me and help
me. If Carbon have not turned around, I certainly would have lost consciousness
in the middle of a deserted ball park! Sometimes he also smells my breath, and
that give me the clue that my sugar level is too high. He is 100% of the time
is right.
Carbon is my hero every day!
