Panda Bear, the Dog of the Day
Name: Panda Bear
Age: Four and a half years old
Gender: Female Breed: Border Collie mix
Home: Ottawa, Ontario, USA

This is my wonderful baby girl Panda Bear! Panda's story started April 2004 when I was walking with my dog Spot when I heard yelping in a house and I could see through the screen door a man beating his puppy when I yelled at him to stop when he was about to shut the door. I told him I would call the humane society if he wouldn't (I still did but with no proof they couldn't do much), and a few moments later he opened the door and threw her out down his stairs and slammed the door.

Panda has been with me since she was four months old and is truly the best dog in my eyes. Panda is my best friend and is extremely smart, loving, funny and not to mention beautiful. Panda and I have a very strong bond. I'm very clumsy so whenever I do something where I might hurt myself (running, climbing or when about to use my bike) she barks until I stop whatever she deemed dangerous so in Panda's book the safest (and only) thing I can do is walk:) Panda is always there for me when I'm exhausted and feel dizzy she will pick up any stick, stone, leaf or toy and will bring it in my face and growl then slowly back up and encourages until I concentrate on her to the point of being able to walk again. She is also always there to protect me when I lay in the grass and close my eyes she will stand over me not letting anyone or anything near me and she would never leave my side, I can walk her without a leash and she would not run off or stray to far from me for anything (even if a dog is right in front of us) and she is an excellent help with my cats when they are doing something wrong (I just need to scold them once before Panda knows that they can't do that) she will go up to them and bark or push them with her nose like when they go near the rats or when they approach a plate of food (Panda would not touch a plate of food on the ground if I don't give her permission, even if I leave the room!). All in all Panda is my life and the greatest friend anyone could ask for.

Panda is always there for me, but I'm also always there for her, too. I put myself in debt to have her spayed (she needed special medications and equipment) which cost me $573 or by law would take her away from me saying she was a pit bull. Whenever she shivers or it gets a little chilly outside, I always give her my coat (I usually bring her hoody or coat just in case). I once got attacked by a husky (which was the real start of our bond) when he came after Panda when she was five months old. He almost grabbed her by the throat and when I pushed him off before he did, (Panda did suffer a hurt paw) the dog turned on me and ripped my winter coat and bit my hand. When his owner finally came by, and was so ashamed about what had happened and promised me she would take care I realized my puppy was gone so I searched for her freezing (my coat was ripped) and bleeding but I refused to go home without finding her. Finally when my mom forced me to come in, I was in tears and couldn't stand the thought of not having her with me. But while I was approaching our building, Panda was calmly sitting in front, wagging her tail when she saw us (she was shaking from the cold and from fear). I changed everything in my life for her, like getting another bed and moving to a bigger place. Panda is a weird combination of being my best friend and daughter at the same time. When at the dog park (two to three times daily) people often tell me how incredible her love for me is and they say they can tell how much she loves me just by the way she looks at me and I hope she knows how much I love her.

Panda is now almost five years old (her birthday is December 28), and her heart murmur is starting to slow her down (she was born with it). Panda's health is not getting any better and the vet keeps telling me how he thought she wasn't going to make it past age three (her heart murmur was grade four but we managed to get it down to grade three with a lot of exercise and watching her closely) but now since she doesn't run as much, it went back up and he tells me that in a year or two, it may be the end. Tears are running down my cheek just writing this, because I can't imagine life with Panda and I feel so helpless because there's nothing we can do about the murmur. I wanted to share with everyone this very special dog, Panda the light of my life.

   I love you Panda Bear!
