I
was born Amish in a cold winter in a converted chicken barn on Zimmerman's
farm in Southern Maryland, surrounded by shoo fly pie and whoopee cookies
being made and fields of organic vegetables as far as you could see. I am as
black as the eye of a Black-eyed Susan, the Maryland state flower. Most
Pomeranians are red, but I had a black father so I am black with a dash of
white on my chest, quite unique. My people tell me I am really very handsome
every day. My thick black fur is a little unruly but it suits my personality.
I am a fierce, small small dog and my name is Fuji - yes, like the mountain,
not the camera.
My sister and I lived with a bunch of Shih Tzus in the chicken barn, a quiet,
peaceful life awaiting adoption. One spring day when I was about 3 months
old, three women came with Shawn, my caretaker, to see us. I could tell they
weren't Amish; they wore bright colors and talked animatedly. A small voice,
my spirit guide, Fujiyama Fudge Pie, told me the blonde with blue eyes was
looking for me, and if I looked her in the eye she would love me more than
anyone ever would, just as she had him. I hoped she would take my sister,
too, we had always been together. She did! That's when the most exciting day
of my new life began.
The next thing I knew my sister and I had been snatched up and passed among
the women, a check was written and they carried me to the big red Explorer.
My first of many photos was taken with Jason, who is not Amish (Shawn is
Amish and can't be photographed). My moms have this picture in my photo album
so I can remember where I came from.
In just the space of minutes I went from the quiet pastoral Amish existence
to being with my new people and three other dogs in a house with red and
green and yellow walls, televisions blaring, ceiling fans whirring and
everyone talking at once. I never knew so many toys existed. I loved the big
fenced yard where we could run and play and roll in the liriope to our
heart's content. My new big brother, Nemo, mostly snarled at me and Truly,
the showdog, just stayed away from me, but my cousin, Briny, loved my sister
and me with all her little Schipperke heart from the very first moment.
My Mom and Aunt Vickie cried a lot when they decided to separate my sister
and me. They both wanted us, and to keep us together, but it was decided I
should go to Florida, while Mattie would stay with Aunt Vickie and Briny -
who needed a sister and loved Mattie immediately. I do travel by RV and
airplane to visit them several times a year and we love being together. My
life has turned out great and Nemo and Truly have learned to love me. Of
course, my Moms are really crazy about me. I know just how to get them to do
anything.
In a span of a week I, who had previously only ridden in an Amish buggy
through the Maryland countryside, had traveled in the red Explorer, my Aunt
Vickie's convertible, an airplane from National Airport in DC and a beautiful
green sportscar convertible with my fur flying in the Florida breeze. My very
first night in Florida, Mom and I went walking and I got to meet Aunt Jane
and Sharlene and Destiny and the biggest black cat I ever saw and they all
liked me. I thought then, "life is really going to be sweet here!" Who knew I
could have so many friends once I left the farm.
My world has really changed. When I was Amish I didn't even know there was a
Mardi Gras and now I have a whole wardrobe for it. I love a parade too.
Sitting up in my golf cart basket smiling at all the people and dogs just
suits me! Sitting on my porch watching birds and dogs across the lake is my
pastime. My moms even made a movie about my friends, the sandhill cranes.
They might never have known the cranes were there if I hadn't told them, and
I didn't even get a movie credit!
I am such a lucky boy. I have a membership in Greenspace, the most wonderful
playground, where I meet my friends each day. Humans made a special time each
day for just very small but fierce little dogs like me so we can run and play
without getting hurt. I wrote them a letter of thanks. Some days I just love
Greenspace so much I don't want to leave. At first my Mom thinks it is sorta
funny, but then she gets exasperated and has to get Merry to help her catch
me. I can run faster than either of them, but then I think I'd better go get
in the golf cart because my Mom might get her feelings hurt or decide not to
bring me back every day.
Here at Carefree, dogs almost rule and most golf carts have dog treats in
them and lots of people have cookies in their pockets. I get lots of
attention and treats, and I get to talk to all my special dog and people
friends too. I just love my life.
