I
found out you have to be very careful when talking to a person who works in
animal rescue. I off-handedly mentioned that I thought I was ready to get
another dog to my friend who works with various rescue groups. I wanted
another Dachshund; didn't care about sex, age, color, purebred or mixed. A few
days later she told me she had a lead on a group of dogs that had been rescued
recently and that one of them was part Dachshund... was I interested?
Sure, why not. Two days later I was told this group of dogs would be at an
adoption event nearby. All of a sudden I wasn't so sure, but my husband and I
went anyway.
By the time we got there the dog was already being adopted (but I didn't see
any Dachshund in that dog, so that was OK). Then I turned around and saw
Snooki in another enclosure. (She was named Cookie but in our house saying
that word sends the dogs running to the cabinet where I keep their dog
biscuits). She had been on death row at a local shelter, saved by a wonderful
rescue group (they are all wonderful) and placed in our path. How lucky we
are. It took about five minutes with her to know we were taking her home.
She is a fantastic dog, smart, funny and friendly to everyone, people and
dogs. She has one funny little habit... she likes to lick Lola's teeth and
gums. Lola is a big, 60-pound dog but she's content to just lie there and she
lets Snooki stand on her head lick and lick until I decide Lola's had enough.
She's tried to clean Regis' teeth but no, he's not interested in being licked
in the mouth. Snooki must have been a dental hygienist in a former life!
And she's cute as can be with her patchwork quilt of Doxie colors (tan and
black, brindle and the white stripe is probably dapple). She's bonded with our
other Dachshund, Regis, and our Pointer mix Lola and has filled the void in
our lives that we've felt since our Dachshund Kelly died last year. She got
here just in time to be a part of our Christmas card. We had the Grinch and
Max the Dog, but we needed Cindy Lou Who. She's a very cute Cindy Lou! She's
the best Christmas gift!
