We
adopted Samantha over eight years ago from the English Springer Spaniel
Rescue. We were informed that she had been turned over to animal control
in a town in Connecticut. We were unable to obtain any information about
her other than her name. Our vet estimated that she was about four or five
years old at that time. Samantha was sweet and gentle from the moment we
met her. She was being fostered by a breeder. We took our Springer, Dudley
with us to meet Samantha. When we opened the hatch of our SUV to get some
water for Dudley, Samantha hopped right in. She decided she wanted to go
with us and we hoped the two dogs would get along once they were together
at our home. I noticed on many occasions that Samantha was afraid of any
dog her size or larger (and Dudley was quite a bit larger). We suspect
that she might have been attacked or intimidated by a larger dog. However,
from the first day they got along. Dudley often kissed Samantha on her
face and they sometimes slept close together, as in the photo below. It
seemed that Samantha knew she was in her "forever" home and had nothing to fear.
She got along well with small dogs and cats and she loved children. As
you can see in the larger photo, Samantha loved her yellow ducks (and had
many of these.) When she was with us only a few days, it occurred to me to
offer her a squeaky toy (Dudley never liked these after puppyhood). She
was in heaven and squeaked it until the squeaker broke, so we kept buying
new toys. She no longer liked to squeak them, but loved to have them and
ducks were her favorites. In the morning we would find at least five ducks
lined up in or near our bedroom. Just for fun, I would put them back in a
basket and eventually Sammy took them out again.
Poor Samantha suffered terribly from allergies and we took every step
possible to make her comfortable. We realized this problem as soon as we
brought her home and it was difficult for her and for us, but we could
never have parted with such a sweet dog. She helped ease our pain and
sorrow when Dudley died, and now Samantha has joined him to wait for us at
the Rainbow Bridge. Farewell my sweet girl, until we meet again. I was
blessed to have your love.
