Here's
our dog, his name is Kirby. We rescued him, and his owner died a
while ago, so he had been in foster homes for about a year so there
isn't a lot known about him. He came to live with us in Cave Creek,
Arizona on Sunday, March 15, 2009. At first he was very timid. But he is
warming up to the house and the family - me, my husband, our two twin
boys age 9-1/2, and another dog and cat that already live here. We are
hoping they will all be friends eventually but right now there is a bit
of a skirmish going on between the dogs as they get to figure out who's
boss. Kirby is very special because he has needed a new home for a while
and now he has one, with us.
It has now been about eight months since we adopted him. He has made himself
quite at home in his new home with us. He and the cat are playmates and
play games with each other most of the day. Kirby has his favorite spots
in our house. During the day, he will park himself on the top of the
couch pillows right next to our front window, so that he can see what's
going on. When we drive in the driveway, there he is looking out the
window at us, happy to see us. At night, he chooses our son Kevin's bed;
when Kevin goes to bed so does Kirby. In the morning he will start to
visit me and say his good mornings as he wants to go out.
His personality is happy, a little aggressive, but since he is small it
comes across as cute: on our walks he barks at other dogs that are much
bigger than him. He plays games with socks - he runs around the house
with one in his mouth sometimes, really fast, and likes being chased. He
will sit for cheese but he has yet to learn other tricks. He hates the
rain and cold, and doesn't like to go outside when it is raining... he
will walk daintily so as not to get his feet wet. When we are leaving
the house sometimes he will run out when we open the door because he
wants to go too, and he likes to be with us, and then it's hard to catch
him to get him back in. He will hop up in my lap for a quick visit but
is not a total lap dog, he is independent and likes his space. He has
quickly become a beloved member of our family and fits in with all of
us, including the cat and other dog. We feel so lucky to have found him
and given him a new home.
