Hi,
meet my dog Rocco, also known as Rocky.
I wish I could tell you I was smart and rescued my Yorkie. Unfortunately,
since I never owned any pets before, I was very uninformed and I purchased
Rocky from a Pet Store. I was happy, I didn't know then of all the dogs who
are in shelters and need a home. I really didn't know, so now I live with
guilt. Luckily, Rocky is here and I can't regret having him... that's impossible.
He makes me so happy, even after all the illnesses he's had, probably due to
the bad irresponsible breeding that pet stores are known for. Rocky needed
surgery shortly after I purchased him. He had hip dysplasia. It broke my
heart to take in an eight-month-old puppy in for surgery. I was already in love
with him and I guess that was my price to pay, for buying from a pet store.
Other random illnesses have also followed, along with the hundreds of dollars
in vet bills, but it's not his fault. It's my responsibility to love and care
for him. Rocky has changed my life in every way possible. He is so loving, and
so calm.
Little dogs are known to be yappy and little ankle biters, but not Rocky.
He is sweet, calm, and well behaved. He thinks he's human. He will hang out
with adults, and he has a snobby look about him when other dogs approach him,
like he feels superior. Eventually he warms up and starts playing with them,
but not until he makes them work for it. Perhaps fame got to his little head,
since Rocky is a little ROCKstar, because he made the cover of Bark Magazine
once!
Rocky loves to play fetch, and he loves to wrestle! We play rough, and he puts
on his ferocious face, and pretends he's going to attack ... but he won't. He
trusts me and I trust him, and it's only play.
He loves going for walks, and although all the smells and leaves are a
distraction, he'll often look up at me with his liquid brown eyes and thanks
me for taking the time to walk him. (We have a secret language, based on looks
alone).
My Rocco is very smart. And he loves to test me and push my buttons! For
example, he's potty trained ... but at times he's lazy and chooses to have an
"accident" - but he knows what he's doing! The second I give him the
"look", he runs to the bathroom! He just loves being a brat sometimes ...
ironically enough, I think it's adorable, just don't tell him I said so!
Rocco would like everyone to know to look at shelters and rescue first,
instead of stores - there's a dog out there that needs you!
