My
pet is a bloodhound, born February 2009. His name is Earl Lee Byrd,
nicknamed Early, but he sleeps in every morning and stays out late! His
favorite thing is fetching deer parts during hunting season, bringing home
any nasty thing he can find as a toy/trophy. His favorite are discarded
legs, skin and hooves included. Our favorite thing about Earl is that he is
the sweetest boy that has ever lived. He is gentle and loving and never
speaks a cross word!
As you can see by one of the photos, one of Earl's favorite games is to
play a sparring match with the rooster. They will go at this for at least
an hour, with the rooster running up on Earl, Earl springing into the air
and woo, woo, wooing in that classic bloodhound bark. After about an hour,
the two are exhausted and just turn and walk away. Only to begin again the
next morning...
Earl is in constant pursuit of smells. His nose is forever to the ground,
picking up the scent of anything that has passed by, along with a slew of
ticks and chiggers. It has become a ritual to de-tick him before coming
into the house. His best friend is our Manchester Terrier, Buster. We live
on 60 acres, surrounded by 800 acres of farm and hunting land, so the boys
take off pretty regularly for their romp through the woods looking for any
critter that will run. They have no less than a dozen ponds to stop at and
go for a swim. If it weren't for the fact that they prefer dog food to wild
game, I sometimes think they'd never come home. But a dog's life it is...
They have the best of all worlds here in the Ozarks of North Central
Arkansas. The coyotes don't seem to bother them, but Earl does a fine job
of keeping the coyotes and other critters of prey away from the cows and
their offspring. On any given day, you can look out into a pasture and see
Earl majestically resting on a grassy hill, keeping his eye on the herd,
waiting for his buddy Buster to rest up for their next outing.
