This
is my beautiful liver spotted Dalmatian, CoCo. Pure chance brought us
together. Poor Cokey was horribly abused and starving when I found her.
Here's her sad story with a happy ending...
I found myself at a friend of a friend's house one day. Down a hallway came
the most pitiful looking creature I had ever seen. She came straight to me,
lay her head on my lap and stared at me. She was a walking skeleton, had
open sores on her haunches and stunk to high heaven. To say I was shocked
would be an understatement. The 'owner' (I have other words to describe
her) must have seen the horror on my face. She said 'That dog doesn't like
anyone! I can't believe she came right to you!' I was absolutely
dumbfounded. This poor dog was pleading with me 'Please Save me!' and
that's exactly what I did. I vaguely remember that woman blabbering some
lame excuse as to why this dog was in the state she was in. I stood up and
Cokey headed for the door - I was right behind her. I opened the door and
she went straight to my car (how she knew it was mine, I'll never know). I
opened the door. She jumped in. Off we went. And that was that.
Cokey wasn't house broken. She didn't know how to manage stairs. She had
lot's of broken/missing teeth. I shudder to think of how that happened. She
was a bag of bones, had sores all over and she was full of worms. She must
have been beaten - she flinched if you moved too fast around her. She
freaked if I got the broom out. She wasn't spayed and it was easy to see
she'd had many litters. We have a hunch that she was used as a puppy
machine. It wasn't always easy as she came with so much baggage. It took a
few years to fully gain her trust. She was with us for 6 yrs. and passed on
this August. For the last two years, she was totally deaf and almost
completely blind. Our two other dogs guided her around - she did just fine as
long as nothing was added or moved in the house.
She had a very rough start but ended up in a loving home with doggy
siblings to play with and lots of room to run. She was a sweety and had fur
like velvet. She became a friendly, outgoing, spunky character and we miss
her terribly.
Consider saving a shelter dog or adopting from a rescue. Any issues they
may have can be overcome with kindness, love and patience. You'll be very
glad you did.
