Lacy, the Dog of the Day
Name: Lacy
Age: Eight years old
Gender: Female Breed: Papillon
Home: Greene, Maine, USA

This is the story of our precious Lacy. She is a three-pound, eight-year-old Papillon. We have three other Papillons that are all special, but with Lacy every day is a true blessing. Keeping her healthy is such a delicate balancing act. Our vet always says she has lived this long because she has a good mom, but I believe it is because of her strong spirit and will to live that has kept her alive this long.

Our vet knew during her first visit at nine weeks old that her size was going to cause health issues for her, but at the time she just didn't know what. Then when she was a year and a half old she was diagnosed with Hepatic Micro vascular Dysplasia (a rare liver disorder). At three years old she started having seizures and was diagnosed with Epilepsy. Because her liver is compromised, over the years she has had countless bouts of vomiting, diarrhea, emergent trips to the vet, and countless rounds of antibiotics.

But through it all Lacy always perseveres! Her will to live is truly an inspiration to me daily. She never acts depressed or resists her treatments. She enjoys life just like her brothers and sisters. Some of her favorite things to do are to chase after her brother Linus' tail, she absolutely loves playing fetch with acorns (she does not eat them), but her number one favorite thing to do is sit in the safety of mom's arms.

She loves to have her belly rubbed, of course her belly is so tiny so she lifts her hind leg way up to allow better access to allow you to rub her belly with two fingers, because that is all that fits across her tummy. If you stop before she wants you to, she lets you know by using her front paw and tugs on your hand to move it toward her belly, and she won't give up easily, she can be quite forceful with that little paw! And she also loves to bark! Only when she plays though. Her way of playing is standing on the outskirts (so she won't get hurt) watching the other three dogs play and she barks at them, occasionally catching onto Linus' tail. Her bark is a very deep bark for her size my Dad calls her McRuff.

I feel so connected to her, I know when she is having a bad day and needs a dose of Pepcid or some fluids. Her strength, strong will, love of life, unconditional love and trust, are traits I wish all people possessed.

I feel blessed every day to have her in my life. With a special diet, daily meds, and endless amounts of love, we are hoping she will defy the odds and live a Papillons full life expectancy. And why not, she has amazed us multiple times over the years with her determination, with Lacy, I believe anything is possible.

She truly is my heart, my soul, my Precious Lacy.
