Duke
is a shelter dog. We found him around Christmas time a few years ago
and he has been a great fit for our family. He is fun-loving, lively, and a
great companion. He is a tennis ball fanatic which makes playing fetch a
little complicated because he will never give it back! Duke is curious and
kind, playful and protective, and the most wonderful dog anyone could ask
for. Here are a few pictures that I believe exemplify his personality!
Duke was originally named King and was given to the shelter by his owner
who was sick and could no longer care for him. "King" made a friend at the
shelter- another Akita, named Shyanna, which is rare for their breed. They
became so close that when we went to adopt Duke in December of 2006, we
couldn't bear to separate them and decided to adopt Shyanna as well. They
play and fight with each other all day long. Duke is protective of our
family and is wary around strangers. He prefers to keep close to one of us
(a family member) during times when guests/visitors are in our house.
Having a lot of people around can make him nervous, but Duke is a
kind-hearted dog and has never showed aggression towards a stranger. As for
tricks, Duke can "speak" when we ask him to, sit, or give you a high five
with his paw. A treat usually awaits after he performs a trick so he often
attempts them even if we don't ask. He can play fetch, but he loves tennis
balls so we usually don't get the ball back! Duke is always there to greet
you when you walk through the door with a tennis ball in his mouth waiting
to play. Duke loves to chase squirrels in the backyard, gently chew on your
hands like they are his own chew toy and snuggle up right next to you when
your trying to go to sleep. We are so lucky and happy to have them as our dogs.
