Kingy, the Dog of the Day
Name: Kingy
Age: Ten years old
Gender: Male Breed: Husky mix
Home: Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Kingy is a truly beautiful dog with bright blue eyes and a soft thick coat that gets thicker in the wintertime. Because of his unending energy, people are surprised when I tell them Kingy's age. I attribute this to the fact that we've never given him dog food. He eats either a modified raw diet, or with me. He has manners that borders on civility. For instance, he is able to nibble chicken off the bone while I hold it, and take pea sized bites from a fork.

Kingy is very, very vocal and communicates with a wide range of sounds, most at a low but deep level. Our friends say he is basically talking. Kingy is the type of dog that is liked, even by those people that claim not to like dogs.

When I first got Kingy, he was a runner. But after the first year I installed a dog door to the back yard (we have a large backyard) and started to walk him every day. You see King, as he was first known, was supposed to be a temporary guest, as I was watching him as a favor for a friend's friend (I didn't know King's first owner). But after seven to eight months King became family, so I told my friend I was keeping him, and if his friend had an issue with it he should speak to me directly. It worked out.

King became Kingy when my wife Cris, then my girlfriend who had just moved here from Brazil, pronounced every letter in his name. Kin-gee.

The first year was tough, as Kingy bolted whenever the door opened. Then I would spend hours trying to find him. But know matter how long he had been gone I always eventually found him in my neighborhood. He was my first dog, so I was learning on the job, so to speak. Once I started walking him and bringing him to dog parks, his need to run lessoned. To this day he does have the same curiosity. Only now he doesn't bolt, but given enough time, he'll meander out the door and walk slowly down the street.

Kingy knows how to play hide and seek and will sit patiently, while I disappear to the opposite side of our house. Once I whistle, he'll begin his search room by room until I'm found.

He's has a touch of doggie OCD (my diagnosis), that comes off as the civility of which I spoke earlier. For instance, if I am eating something he wants, I'll have offer it to him three distinct times. He'll turn his head the first two times, then take it on the third. Kingy is great with all people and dogs, kids included. He'd rather play or walk than eat, anytime! He will leave food in his bowl until he's hungry, and leave some if he's full. He also won't eat if other people are around whether or not we're home (there's that OCD again) :). Food is not a priority to Kingy.

I could go on, but it suffices to say that I think my dog's the smartest, handsomest, healthiest, funniest, most talented, and most loyal creature ever created. But then I guess we all feel that way about our dogs.
