About Us
Azalea, the Dog of the Day
Name: Azalea
Age: Three years old
Gender: Female Breed: Malamute, Samoyed
Home: Massachusetts, USA

Azalea is my dog, she is half Alaskan Malamute and half Samoyed. Azalea's truest talent is making everyone around her happy. She loves to snuggle and can be very determined when she wants one, such as climbing onto the couch and resting her head on our shoulders. Azalea is therapeutic as well; when my husband or I are in bad moods, just sitting with her calms us down. When we took a trip to New York City, people kept stopping us to ask if they could take her picture or have us take a picture of them with her because she's so sweet and beautiful.

Azalea can be really funny in her ways too. On the few occasions she is bad (e.g., eating dog treats off the table, as she knows better than that!), she slinks to a corner to punish herself for a few minutes. Alternatively, she sheepishly leaves the room and then bounds in from a different entrance, as if saying, "Whoa, who was that guy? That wasn't me, it must have been my evil twin!"

Funnily enough, Azalea's tongue is either too large for her mouth or her teeth are too tiny, because sometimes her tongue will be hanging out even when her mouth is completely closed! That always gets a laugh from everyone.

Azalea comes over to comfort me when I'm sad. She keeps me company when I cook, and not because she wants food, but because she wants to be near me. Her favorite food is kibble, followed by ruby red grapefruit (although she rarely gets that). Even though Azalea is 106 pounds, she still thinks she's tiny and has to pause and gather her wits before jumping out of the car. We have two steps that lead to a landing in our garage; while our other dog leaps up and down from the landing, Azalea is ever the lady and has to daintily walk up each step. Azalea's best trick is "fist bump" - when you hold out your fist, she bumps her nose against it. She also is extremely good at "paw" and volunteers her paw all the time (maybe a little too much), and also knows "high five". She is capable of "stay", but it's really not her favorite because she likes to be close to people. In fact, if you kneel down and call her over, she only stops when she's literally half an inch from your nose!
