It
had been just over eight years since I lost my last K9 companion and I
was told by a dear friend back then that I would have another dog and that
"He would come to you in a very special way."
Last May my sisters in Seattle called and told me about "Gary." His first
owner of ten years passed away and Gary ended up in a shelter. His teeth
were pretty bad so they pulled all but three of them! He was adopted again and
after only one year his second companion died and he needed a new permanent home.
Gary did come in a very special way: My sister and brother-in-law put him
in the car and drove him nonstop from Seattle to Las Vegas to come live with me.
Gary is deaf, quite blind and only has three teeth - (he and I have a lot
in common - we could be twins)! Two months after he arrived here, he jumped
down from his perch under the window and broke his back leg. He was in a
cast for just over five months. He had six sets of x-rays, seven new casts
and fourteen follow up vet visits throughout this time and he was always
brave, never complained and remained good natured. While I was a nervous
wreck - he just got on with his life. Definitely smarter than me!
I don't know how he knew it (especially since he is stone deaf) but he
learned he could tap his cast on the tile floor to get my attention in the
kitchen when he was hungry and at the door when it was time to "take care
of business."
Whether I am home or not, at about 3pm every day he moves over to the rug
in front of the front door and waits for me to come home.
Here are two pictures of him the day he got his cast off showing off his
dreadlocks from the leg that missed the three grooming sessions the rest of him
got. The tongue is always out since he has no teeth to hold it in! Have to
approach him with treats from his left side so he can use his tongue to
take them from your hand.
He Enjoys: Having his Face Rubbed, Cookies, Sleeping, Pre-Washing Dishes and Walks
He Hates: Getting X-rays and Wearing a Cast
