This
is Bear, my fifteen-month-old Australian Shepherd! Don't tell him he's
a dog though as he is certain he is human! Bear was hit by a car on
September 12th of this year and went through two surgeries to fix his broken
leg but boy oh boy. it hasn't slowed him down much at all! He had an
external fixator for almost three months and he would still get outside and run
circles around the house. All he wants to do is run run run and play play
play! We can't even slow him down on sedatives, "grandpa" would take us to
the University of Illinois Animal Hospital which is an hour away from home
and he would try his best to jump over the back seat just to be near us. As
you can see in this photo taken today he has definitely mastered his pitiful
look and he uses it often to his advantage. He had us trained to scratch his
head since he can't use his bad leg to take care of the itchies himself.
His best friend, other than me of course, is Spitfire our cat, they snuggle
and sleep together all of the time and if Spitfire the cat can't be found
Bear will try to find him. Bear knows sit, lay down, roll over, speak,
shake, and other commands. He answers to Bear but he knows Boo is his
nickname and will respond to that as well. He also knows if the kittens
start scratching furniture that they are being bad and he will go "nose"
them to make them stop. Bear likes to be organized so when outside he will
line all of his toys up in a row.
I myself have had a few surgeries in the last year and Bear has always been
by my side! If I leave the house once I get home he's so happy he cannot
contain himself, he'll whine and shake his lil nub to show me how much he
hates me being gone. And heaven forbid I go into the bathroom by myself, if
he's not with me behind the closed door he will pace and whine until I come
out! He does love his human family a lot as he always thinks he needs to
have everyone's attention!
Bear loves to go for rides and furthermore hates it when I leave the house
without him. Today I went out to start the car to leave and he followed me
and jumps in the car. For at least ten minutes he refused to get out -
finally I had to turn off the ignition and leave him in there for a good five
minutes. I then went out, opened the door and he jumps out! He's out of
casts finally and all back to normal!
He is so full of energy it's hard to keep him busy at times so next year we
will have a yard full of chickens for Bear to use his herding instincts. He
just loves making us happy and he succeeds every minute of every day! Bear
is truly my best friend and I can't imagine going a day without him!
