This
is our Australian Shepherd, Maui. She is a typical Aussie, smart,
loyal, great with kids and keeps all of us in line. We took this picture
on the dog beach in Juno Beach, Florida, which we all love visiting. It's
a treasure beach for animal lovers and their families (two-legged and
four-legged). Maui is twelve, and runs almost as fast as she did when she
was a youngster. What she's lost in speed, she has gained in wisdom.
Maui is pretty talented. She knows a number of tricks. The one people
enjoy the most is, she will get you a Kleenex tissue when you sneeze. She
uses that when she does a little volunteer therapy work with sick kids.
She also fetches the keys (this helps when we've misplaced them). She
plays "bang bang you're dead" although Hollywood would say the look on her
face is a giveaway. When we tell her to lay down and 'do sad,' her chin
rests in the floor. If we put a treat on her nose and say "Stay," she
won't take and eat the treat until we tell her "OK".
We also get the typical greeting when we come home, even if we've been
gone for just twenty minutes. She has no tail to wag, instead she has taught
herself how to give a big smile. It is really heartwarming, especially
after a tough day at work.
Maui is very affectionate (gives 'free' kisses). But she does have two
jobs at home. First, she is the Director of Security. With a knock on the
door or when she hears noise outside, the Aussie bark of warning and
readiness kicks in. Once its been confirmed that the visitor is friendly,
Maui then becomes the Director of Hospitality!
Maui has no idea she is a dog ... We are just a huge part of her pack!!
She was named after our favorite place in the world, the island of Maui.
Her favorite game is "Hide a Seek" with her bone. She will not hide it
until she knows noone is looking at her. Maui was well trained when she
was a puppy, and we focused on making her a "Service/Therapy" to visit
kids and senior citizens. Her other tricks, include but not limited too,
Pulling hats off kids' heads, pulling out girls' hair ties, backing up,
bowing, trained to come on my whistle, twirling, the list goes on and on.
She is 100% dog, 100% family and 100% a treasure in our lives.
