Rocky, the Dog of the Day
Name: Rocky
Age: Fifteen months old
Gender: Male Breed: Alaskan Malamute
Home: Upstate New York, USA

This is Rocky, an alaskan malamute. One of the oldest breeds that spans over the centuries, the breed takes their name from the Mahlemuts of the Inuit Alaskans. Loving, loyal, independent, a breed that is unique to so many, they are built for endurance and strength. These gentle giants give respect and demand respect. Over the last year since we brought home this giant puppy, he has taught me so many things ... above all patience.

I never understood why so much literature and so many breeders repeatedly stated a malamute is not for everyone. Bringing a malamute into your family requires patience and repetition and above all love. They are often mistaken for being not so smart (which is completely wrong) Is based on their level of independence. A malamute must have the ability to refuse its master/mistress request as it is a genetic component. As mushers rush through the Alaskan wilderness, only the sled dogs had the ability to sense the thickness of ice covering frozen lakes or underlying crevices in the snow cover plains. Malamutes have to be strong headed enough to refuse a command as a self preservation determination for not only the team, but the musher as well. Hence the misinterpretation of them being "not so smart" or "hard to train."

Rocky has brought so much joy to our hearts and many moments of throwing my hands up in the air as sign of I give up lol. But one look into the beautiful soulful big brown eyes of this animal speaks volumes. He guards over our children as if a watchful mother. He joyfully greets neighbors over the fence. He stands proud and dignified. He stops traffic walking through town and has become a weekend figure at our local Starbucks from playing with smiling children to giving seniors a great big kiss! Patience is a must, as is lots of love and understanding. Rocky to me and our family is dog of the day every day. An Alaskan Malamute is not a breed for everyone, true. But if one takes time to understand this majestic animal and have the patience to give respect to the antiquity of this breed, one will have many many years of enjoyment, loyalty and love in return. I'm so looking forward to Rocky maturing and being part of our family for many many more years to come ... Rocky ... Our malamute!
