Sundar
is a two-year-old Rough Collie. Toward strangers, he is a genteel and
dignified character but with his family, he is a happy-go-lucky fellow who is
ever so very slightly naughty. On occasion, I will come down the stairs in
time to hear a rapid scrabble and see a flash of fur disappearing from the
vicinity of the living room sofa (he is not allowed on the furniture). He is
so ashamed then that he won't do it again for months! I scold him only gently
because he is such a conscientious dog. Once he understands what I want from
him, he does his very best to please me. He is sweet and kind, endlessly
patient with my four young children, ages two to seven.
Plus, he is beautiful. Strangers approach me whenever I take him out to tell
me just how handsome he is. In fact, his name, Sundar, means "handsome" in
Hindi. While he is a wonderful family dog, loyal and loving to all six of us,
he is doubtlessly "my dog". He is a bright, sunny spot in my every day ... I
am so very grateful for the steadfast company he provides me. He is always
smiling. We are a pair, he and I. We just "click". I dote on him, hopeful to
extend his days here with me. He is in wonderful health and I hope to have
him with me for many many years to come (collies live twelve to fourteen years, a long
lifespan for a large dog).
He is a casual eater, never gulping his food in spite of my attempts to
concoct dishes to his liking. He eats very little considering his size. He
knows to not beg ... When I catch him staring longingly at our food, I speak
sternly to him and he immediately stops.
He is neither over nor under active. He loves more than anything to be near
me ... If I am in the kitchen, he is also there. If I read in the living
room, he can be found a few feet off curled up like a kitten for a nap. He
craves my attention, but also respects my space. When I go outside, he leaps
up, wriggling with excitement. His very favorite thing to do is catch and
return anything from a ball to a stick. He is fast and agile, performing
astounding leaps to catch a frisbee. He is tireless, retrieving as long as I
will throw for him. Sundar is smart and will accommodate my mood in order to
encourage me to play with him. For example, he will deliver his toy directly
into my hand for me to throw. He never holds onto it, refusing to release it
... His is a herding breed which I believe is why he is able to think things
through like he does. He really is a perfect dog. I am proud and honored to
live with such a noble beast!
