I
grew up in a home brimming with dogs. So when my husband and I finally
decided to buy a home and settle for a while I knew that it was time to get a
dog. I felt the responsibility of trying to improve the life of a dog that
may not have had the best start. So we decided to get a rescued dog. This is
how Lamar came into our lives. The moment I saw his photo from a respected
organisation in Hungary I knew he was meant for us. We are told he is a
Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Chinook, Pug and Mixed Breed.
Lamar had a poor start in life. He was sentenced to death by the leaders in
the village where he was found. They wanted to shoot him. However, the people
from the dog rescue organisation (FAPF) saved him from that fate. He must
have belonged to someone at one time in the past. While inspecting him for
ticks one day we saw deep scars around his neck from a tight collar or chain
that had cut into his skin for a long period of time. We also found many
other scars on his body under his fur.
Lamar has completed our family. He is a constant source of amusement. He is
our four legged furry fly catcher. Nothing excites him more than being able
to chase down a fly. He and my husband are the dynamic fly swatting duo. I
sometimes fear for my curtains!
The day he learned he could swim a new obsession began with water. If you
take your eye off of him on a walk; SPLASH! He is in the water. We live in
the Netherlands, there is water everywhere. Paradise for Lamar.
Lamar knows the names of his many, many toys. He also knows that his toys go
back into the basket when not being played with. One morning, after a poor
night of sleep, my husband volunteered to take Lamar out for his walk so that
I could have a lie in. Lamar refused to go because that isn't part of the
routine. I am the one that walks him in the morning. He kept coming back to
me trying to find a way to get me out of bed. Finally in a last attempt to
get me to go with him he picked up his toys and put them in the basket and
then look at me with those big brown eyes. How can you say no to that?
This little street dog is very well mannered in the house. He doesn't eat
food that isn't his, even if it is laying in front of him. He has excellent
toileting, he doesn't chew on anything but his toys; if it isn't his he
leaves it alone and yet he isn't toy or food possessive. He loves new people,
although due to his past experiences it does take him a while to get brave
enough to greet them. Once he does though, he will lay next to the visitor
while here and will look for them when they are gone.
He loves to look smart. He now picks out which bandanna he wants to wear for
the day. However, baths are still evil and although he will passively submit,
he still tries to convince me with pleading eyes that maybe he shouldn't have
them. After all, he is a boy and boys don't need baths. Even if they love to
roll in bird poo until it drips off their ears.
Being a proper little boy, nothing excites him more than a game of ball. We
were off leash one day and he came up behind me with a soccer ball that
didn't belong to us clamped firmly in his mouth. I have no idea where he
found it but he was ever so pleased to have it. He barked enthusiastically to
convince me to give it a kick so he could chase it down.
Lamar loves to use his nose - to interesting effect. He likes to find dead
things on our walk. After a few times of pulling rotting birds out of his
mouth we have finally taught him that it is OK to find the dead thing but not
OK to pick it up. There is nothing more disgusting than prying a rotting
pigeon out of your dog's mouth!
Right now my little boy is convalescing. He is healing from surgery on his
luxated patella. He is a smooth chap and had all of the women in the animal
hospital fawning over him. He may hate the waiting room but once inside the
examination rooms he turns on the charm. He is very gentle with them and puts
on a brave face, no whimpering from this suave dog.
Lamar is our precious little boy. He has filled a hole that we didn't even
know we had in our lives. His antics keep us amused and yet he is calm and
relaxed. He is growing in confidence every day and we are enjoying watching
him come into his own. This sweet thing has become the centre of our world
and we can't imagine life without him.
