Punkin
came into our lives very early on the morning of December 22, 2009
when I was caring for her pregnant mom while the family went on a three week
vacation to Mexico City. She was one of six puppies born the morning. I enjoyed
caring for the new family and never even gave it a thought that I might end
up adopting one of them as we already had The Perfect Dog at home, our
three-year-old Lab/Rottie mix.
After about a week, the pups began to start investigating their surroundings,
though their eyes were still closed. I noticed that every time I came to
check on them and feed mom or clean the pen area that this one little puppy
was always at my feet, scooting on her tummy to follow me. I quickly realized
that this puppy had already imprinted on my voice.
My friend called me a few days later to tell me that he wanted me to have
pick of the litter for taking care of their new four-legged family. Though I was
appreciative of the offer, my husband and I were not sure bringing a puppy
into our home when we already had a dog with the perfect personality would be
a good idea. We after-all didn't want her behavior to change. We talked it
over and decided we would just give it a test. At about ten days of age, I
brought the puppy to our house, just two doors away, for a 30 minute
introduction. I stood in the open doorway with this tiny ball of fluff in my
cupped hands and called to our Kayla who was seated on the couch. I said,
"Kayla, mommy brought you someone to meet". To our surprise, she laid down on
the couch and rolled on her side, inviting me to bring the puppy to her. I
laid the pup up against her side and she began to suckle, with no resistance
from our Kayla. The rest is history!
Punkin continued to visit every night for 30 minutes until the age of five
weeks, when I brought her home to stay. Kayla took over from there, showing
her puppy the ropes, how to use the doggie door to the outside, how to
maneuver the stairs, and so much more. They had become mother and daughter,
even though they are different breeds and to this day, are inseperable.
Punkin has the most amazing personality! She is very friendly with anyone who
enters our home, offering free kisses all around. She loves to cuddle and
still sleeps on her back in bed with us every night. She is mischevious and
playful and when she starts to grumble talk with us, it is the funniest thing
to watch as she will talk back as long as we continue to talk to her. She has
the most adorable expressions on her face which are enhanced with a tilt of
her head or the lifting of one or both ears to the point of looking like The Flying Nun!
She is quite the leader and has definitely become the Alpha Dog in the
family, regardless of her size! We have since added another rescue to the
family, Sissy, a Belgian Malinois and Punkin easily puts her in her place
even though she out weighs Punkin by over 40 pounds (18 kg). But when she is not ruling
the roost, she can be seen snuggled up on the couch, tight up against her mom
and sister. They have an amazing bond that I have not seen in many multi-dog families.
Suffice it to say, I could not imagine how quiet our household would be, had
I not introduced that tiny ball of fur to my Kayla four and a half years ago. I
would not change a thing! She is family and always will be, as are all my fur-kids!
