Rico, the Dog of the Day
Name: Rico
Age: Three years old
Gender: Male Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Home: Pflugerville, Texas, USA

Rico is my first experience with a shelter dog. I lost my beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Tony, to cancer in July of 2012. Tony was eleven, and I was heart broken to say the least. He got sick on 4th of July, and I had to let him go seven painful days later. I was also very very ill at the time. My husband and I swore no more pets, as it was too hard on me, and with my health issues, I couldn't take another loss right now.

Two months later, I was on Facebook, and I saw the cutest little white scruffy wire haired Jack Russell Terrier, and to my surprise he was right up the road from me in a shelter. I looked at the picture several times that day, and then moved on. I couldn't stop thinking about this adorable, scared little dog. I called the shelter and they asked how I knew about him, as he had only just been picked up, and dogs have to be held for seven days before they are able to be adopted ... this was day six for him. They said I could come and look at him, but not take him out of his cage, until day seven. I took one look at that face, and knew he would go home with me!! To this day do not know how or who posted that picture of him on Facebook.

My granddaughters named him Rico, after Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite. He was scared, thin and had lost a lot of his fur especially around his face from trying to escape the tiny cage they had him in, he had obviously been abused. Those first few days he stuck to my side like glue; slept with me, followed me everywhere I went though the house, he walked daily with me, and soon we got him his own bed, and his own toys. Before we knew it, he had turned into the class clown of our household. Within a couple of weeks, he had put on weight, his fur grew back, and he was the light of my day. Since Rico came into my life, I am now very active volunteering with Best Friends, and organizing a dog walk/festival in Austin!

He runs to greet everyone at the front door and wags his whole body when we come home from work. Who would have ever dreamed that scared little shelter dog could be such a wonderful important addition to my family! He helped my heart heal, and to this day, I believe Tony send him to me. He snuggles up to everyone, and he has a way of knowing when you have had a hard day, and he just curls up in your lap. Of course, he is a Jack Russell, so he will try to make you walk by bringing your tennis shoes to you several times a day! He loves to lay out in his back yard and soak up the rays. He knows he has a new home where he will live out the rest of his days being loved!!
