As
a photographer in the digital age I do the majority of my work On Line now
a days. One privilege I enjoy most is photographing for many of the local dog
and animal rescue organizations. One day in the Spring of 2013, I received an
email about a box containing four puppies that had been cast out along the
side of the road and retrieved one such group. In the email was a blurry
iPhone photo of this tiny, frightened little pup whose whole world, and that
of his three siblings, had been turned up side down. I quickly grabbed one of
my cameras and headed out to take photos of these poor little souls, so that
we might get them posted and find them good loving homes as quickly as possible.
Last to be photographed was a tiny little black and white male. His two
brothers and sister were all mostly black with highlights of tan or brown in
their face, back, and feet. As I picked him up to put him on the table, I
could feel him trembling. I held him to my chest where he kissed my face and
then nuzzled in close under my chin. I could not contain the tears. How could
anyone just abandon such sweet little creatures. I turned to Danielle who
leads the team at DASH Animal Rescue and said "This little guy is coming home
with me." I then held him out where I could see his face and his name just
popped into my head. With a camera in one hand and this little guy in the
other I told this little two pound ball of love, "Shutter. I shall name you Shutter."
I took Shutter home, gave him a good meal and curled up on the couch with him
and watched him sleep. Shutter has become my constant companion and my best
friend. Though I know nothing of his parents, I suspect by his low body, big
front paws, and over all build he is at the very least part Jack Russel. But
it doesn't matter, though he is only sixteen pounds (7kg) now he has the heart of a giant.
Shutter and I go everywhere together. He is a wonderful traveling companion
and a common staple around the studio where he easily charms everyone who
comes through the door. In the year that has followed Shutter and I finding
each other, I have added two more rescue playmates for Shutter to our family.
Brown and black Reesee last Spring, and little boy Porthos just a month ago.
My pack is now complete. Shutter has been so good with his new siblings. They
run and play and chase each other throughout the house. As a big brother
Reesee and Porthos could not ask for better.
On a side note Shutter's brothers and sister are in loving homes and doing
wonderfully. We euthanize 4.4 million healthy dogs and cats in this country
every year. Not every home should have a dog, but every dog should have a
home. Please don't shop, adopt.
