Mitch, the Dog of the Day
Name: Mitch
Age: Five years old
Gender: Male Breed: Beagle mix
Home: Edina, Minnesota, USA

Mitch is our awesome rescue - he's not from these parts! Mitch was born in a shelter in Shelbyville, Kentucky. We were told he never saw the outside of a kennel until he was one to two years old, since he was involved in a divorce case which forced him and his family to be contained to a kennel for fear they could be lost or injured if allowed outside of a kennel while in custody of the county.

Mitch was on Petfinder, and had a 'heart' indicating special needs. When i talked to his foster mom to ask what his special needs were, thinking medical or something -- I was told 'he's weird'! He had been adopted and returned twice. Mitch wouldn't walk through doorways or do stairs. He wouldn't leave the 'safe spot' on our couch for days, and wouldn't eat for a few days.

As it turns out, Mitch is hilarious ... and loving ... and oh so very soulful. He gets along with his new sister, Tess, pretty well, let's just say she tolerates him, but he has a rowdy side that he will unleash upon occasion! We could not be more in love with this boy and look forward to spoiling him for years to come :)

Mitch now does stairs at the speed of light, and goes through doorways with no problems at all! He has a thirteen-year-old Border Terrier sister. He has to check in with her whenever he comes in from outside if she has been in the house - she rules his roost! He loves to go for walks, but apparently that isn't enough since when he's back in the fenced yard he races in circles like a gazelle to burn off that extra energy!

Mitch has to be around his people whenever possible, and loves to have his head rubbed - he'll burrow it under chair cushions or into your legs, just begging you to help with his little burrowed brow. He knows his basic commands of sit and occasionally down. He races to you when called. We haven't worked him too hard learning new tricks, he had enough other catching up to do given his history. When we brought him home, we thought he might like the security of a crate for sleeping, so we attempted to train him to crate when he was home alone or at night. What actually happened was Mitch trained us that he wasn't a crate kind of a guy. He demands nothing, gives everything, and is the biggest, furry bundle of love imaginable. We had two other rescues come to our house to see how Tess would get along, and they were not a match. Mitch is a match :) for all of us!
