Boaz, the Dog of the Day
Name: Boaz
Age: Twelve years old
Gender: Male Breed: Pug
Home: Blaine, North Carolina, USA

Everybody loves Boaz! He is paraplegic, a Canine Good Citizen, a registered Therapy Dog, a registered Read Dog, and my BCF, Best Canine Friend! He turned twelve years old last September.

You can see his story on Boazthepug.com. Check it out! He has ridden my motorcycle with me for hundreds of miles at at time, on the tank, behind the windshield, in front of me, ridden a 4 wheeler, on the back of a bike in a milk crate, and in my canoes and kayaks. His name, Boaz, means, "there is strength within," and the pug motto is a latin phrase for big dog in a little package. His motto is, "If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch!"

Boaz uses his "wheels" only when the ground surface or distances warrant them. Around the house he sort of "scoots" with his rear legs shuffling on the floor or grass, taking some uncoordinated steps from time to time, often standing to eat or drink. He feels no pain and is quite content with his condition, no feelings of self pity. He is also well pampered and taken care of with special a special diet to help prevent urinary tract problems from crystal formations and subsequent urinary tract infections. I, or someone else who is trained, has to help him urinate several times every day.

Since his injury in 2007, he has been paraplegic. He had been involved in some trial drug studies at NC State University Veterinary School in the hopes of finding help for spinal cord victims, animal and human. We were glad to be able to help them and after publishing the positive results of the studies NBC in Raleigh, NC has decided to run a story on the study and include Boaz's participation and some of his videos during the study. I am not sure if that has occurred yet or not but we hope to have a copy of the show afterwards.

Boaz is an AKC titled Canine Good Citizen, so his official name is Boaz, Friend of Ruth, CGC. He is also a registered Therapy Dog to help people in assisted or activity related therapy in schools, hospitals, assisted living, retirement settings, and anywhere else he can make people feel better. He is also a registered R.E.A.D. dog trained to assist children learn to read better and through that experience develop a more positive self esteem in all areas of their lives...all of these accomplishments were after his accident. Pugs are a very old breed that's original purpose with humans was as a companion. Today, they are rarely in competition for sporting, hunting, tracking, working, agility, or obedience...their major role is the same now as it ever was, one in which they excel; a companion to their owners. Boaz is always by my side, whether I am riding in the car, going for a walk, or just relaxing... my ever present companion! I am so thankful for his agape love! Just like they used to say on a TV show, "Everybody Loves Raymond." Everybody Loves Boaz!!
