Darla, the Dog of the Day
Name: Darla
Age: Twelve years old
Gender: Female Breed: Border Collie
Home: Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA

Introducing Darla (also called Dee, Darla-Dee, Miss-Dee, Ol'Girl, Tweddle-Dee (because we have Tweddle-Dum - a big blonde oaf) and Big-girl).

Darla was an accidental rescue. The first time I saw her was in a empty lot across the street from an apartment we where living in. The first thing I said was "Poor Darling" which is how she got her name at the time it was Diamond. She was just as sweet as could be, I got her into my back yard and called the number on her tag. I came to find out that she was owned by a couple that lived a few doors down across the street. Her owner seemed put off that I called, and all she really said was "I cant pick her up until after seven when I get off work". I didn't mind a bit keeping her till her owner could come get her. So we brushed her, because she had burrs stuck in her tail and I played with her and kept her company in the back yard, I had my first son at the time and he was just over a year and not knowing her I didn't want there to be any potential problems even though I knew she would be ok with him. So 7:30p came around and her owner knocked on the door, she was nice enough; but she went on for 45 minutes or so about how Darla was a "bad dog", she won't stay in the yard, she's too hyper, she barks too much, she had just got married and she didn't understand why 'Diamond' didn't get along with her new husband's two boxers, which personally I didn't see it in her, but not really knowing her I couldn't really say anything one way or the other. So away she went home scolded the whole way down the street.

About a month later in August of that year (2007-ish?) we had some serious rain and storms for weeks. My husband and I where sitting in the living room watching tv, I believe it was about eight at night cause it was getting dark and the subject of her came up. I said I kinda missed her, and like some crazy prayer the motion light went off on out steps and up popped her head over the bottom of the screen door, she was soaked. So we brought her in and dried her off and she found her spot on the floor by the couch and I called her owner again. This time she said that she wouldn't be able to get her till after midnight. I knew at that point she wasn't going anywhere, so I sent my husband to the store and he got her bowls and food. We waited for her owner anyway and at about 1am we went to bed and she took her place on my side of the bed and has been there ever since. We never heard from her owner again, and we -never- had any problems with her leaving the yard (even when we bought our house and played fetch in the yard before we had a fence) or not getting along in general.

Darla is the epitome of a good dog, she saved our niece from falling out a second floor window at my brother-in-laws house by barking and crying outside till we all came out. She stopped a man from coming into my mother-in-laws back yard, because he had drugs on him (found out after we called the police, because she never growls at people.. except she did him.), she's protective of my now three kids and three other dogs. She is a good girl. The thing is ...

We didn't save her, we believe that because of her personality that she would have found any good home at that point, one that would have loved her almost as much as we do. But she picked us, and I believe the universe was at play, she's brought such a joy to our lives, and to everyone that knows her. She saved us.
