Buddy the Border Collie/Blue Heeler mix, the Dog of the Day
Name: Buddy
Age: One and a half years old
Gender: Male Breed: Border Collie/Blue Heeler mix
Home: Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, USA

Sometimes you pick a dog, and sometimes a dog picks you. We found Buddy at a small renaissance faire we were working at in Texas. He was wandering around and no one seemed to know whose he was or where he came from.

He was very nice and played well with the other dogs on the property, but he had a big lump on his shoulder that was bleeding. No one seemed to be able to get very close to him before he would shy away. When I saw him, I knelt down and called for him to come over to me. He slowly walked over and sat down. I petted him for a moment, then he leaned into and practically forced me to cradle him and rub his belly. He was mine from then on.

We tried asking around the neighborhood and put an ad in the local newspaper to find his home, but no one responded. We took him to a vet as well, but he didn't have a microchip. So we decided we would take care of him. He shoulder healed up nicely (we still aren't sure what caused it, but he was never really bothered by it), and now you can't tell there was anything wrong.

Since then, he has been my buddy, hence his name. He learned to sit the first day we had him, and could beg the second day. He now loves to sit up in his beg pose whenever you give him the chance. He is very smart and loves to run. I taught him to jump up on to benches and picnic tables and to jump from platform to platform. His favorite thing to do (besides begging) is to run and bound through tall grass. He hops around much like a fox.

He has some anxiety issues that we have been adapting our life around. Since he was a stray, we don't know how long he had been away from his people, or if he ever actually had a steady home. He is very attached to us. Anytime we leave, he is worried we won't come back. He will follow me anywhere and doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

I don't know what I would do without my Buddy-dog. He is the first dog that has been my own, and he is very special to me.
