I would like to introduce my dog, Fenway Parker Bryant.
I have had retired racing greyhounds for 20 years and decided that I wanted to start getting smaller dogs that will be easier for me to walk as I get older. I first adopted a little girl Iggy (Iggy is short for Italian Greyhound) that had been rescued from a puppy mill after having several litters of pups. She is now around 12. Fenway got lucky--his mom was rescued from a puppy mill when she was pregnant, so he was born into rescue. He came to my house when he was four months old. That way, his mom finally had the opportunity to raise her pups, and the five siblings had the chance to be together. In a puppy mill, the babies are torn from their moms at three weeks of age so the mother can get pregnant again.
Of course, Fenway was adorable as a puppy. What puppy isn't? His striking coloring, called blue fawn, made him a standout in his litter. I think he is beautiful! Because blue fawn is considered a "muted" color, he is particularly prone to skin cancer and skin allergies. When he goes outside in the summer he wears a little shirt that is SPF 90 to protect him.
Like their bigger cousins, Italian Greyhounds have only 3% body fat and a very thin coat of fur. They get cold in the winter and even in air conditioning so they wear clothing to keep them warm. Mine always sleep under the covers at night, curled up together, and right up against me. As you can see in the pictures, Fenway spends a lot of time in his "Iggy sack" year round.
All four of my dogs, two retired racing greyhounds, and two Iggys are rescues, and they get along wonderfully with each other. I feel very privileged to have each and every one of them in my life.
