Piper the Border Collie, Belgian Malinois mix, the Dog of the Day
Name: Piper
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female Breed: Border Collie, Belgian Malinois mix
Home: Washington State, USA

My wife Raine first came across Piper (originally she was named Spot) as a puppy on Craigslist. We instantly fell in love, we had to go pick her up despite being a five-hour drive into Oregon. We had already adopted two cats, Enzo and Bayonetta so, bringing in a dog was a little rough at first but now all three are best friends. This dog has truly been a blessing for us, especially for Raine. Eight months after bringing Piper into the family, I received orders to be stationed in South Korea for a year. Aside from being gone, we both lost loved ones. If it wasn't for Piper to pull her through these very hard times, she wouldn't know where she'd be. Piper is always by her side to comfort each other, always down to play and has never gone a day without welcome home kisses and tears of joy when Raine returns home from work.

For starters, Piper is a frisbee fanatic! At first, she didn't know what to think but with persistence at the off-leash dog park she grew to love it, actually, it's an addiction. She's very smart and has always been well behaved even as a puppy. Raising her has honestly been a breeze, she never chewed anything up, occasionally she'd pee in the house, but it didn't take long her to catch on. Learning commands came easily too! She's great off leash, a natural herder, loves to meet and play with other dogs. Piper likes to do her own thing at times, finding ways to occupy herself whenever Raine or myself is busy, with the expectation that she's already been to the park for the day. She loves her attention and gets jealous quick, but after a little while she'll relax, which the cats love, every now and then Enzo will come up to her to say hi. Piper is always on the lookout, making her a great protection dog.

Recently she has developed a bad habit, for some reason she chews paper up into tiny pieces when she's home alone, the important ones at that ... and it's hard to be mad at her because she already knows its bad to do that as if she can't help herself. Aside from loving her frisbee, she has an absolute blast going on hikes. Piper even has her own backpack, carrying her own food, water, bowls and medical supplies! Ultimately, Piper has been Raine's saving grace and has filled both of our lives with so much love and joy, showing her unconditional love for life to everyone around her.
