Pepe the Chihuahua, the Dog of the Day
Name: Pepe
Age: Deceased, eleven years old
Gender: Male Breed: Chihuahua
Home: Audubon, New Jersey, USA

Pepe is a long haired chihuahua, he was adopted from a local rescue. Someone had turned him him, we think because his previous owners worked all day and did not have time to properly care for him. He was a puppy when my husband brought him home. I had been mourning my little poodle Bud who had recently passed away. Pepe was a surprise and a joy for me. It was love at first sight, just a ball of fur. Who could not love that face? He was with us for five years before we adopted a cat, Sam. Pepe was not totally happy with someone else invading his territory but eventually they became buddies. Actually, Sam followed Pepe around the house and we think Sam thought he was a dog.

Unfortunately Pepe died last April, we think he was eleven years old, and poor Sam was lost for a few weeks. Pepe was so much fun, as soon as he ran outside the squirrels in the back yard would scram. He cleared the place out in two seconds, no one could invade his territory. We had dogs on both sides of our yard and he would run from side to side letting the other dogs know that he was out and for them to come outside to play. When the dog on one side of our yard passed away Pepe would go to the fence and bark. He did that for the longest time because he did not realize the dog was gone. Then when Pepe passed away the dogs on the other side of our yard would bark for Pepe to come out and play. They missed him too.

He was ornery though, every time we would open the door the would sit there and if he saw the opportunity he would run out and explore the neighborhood. Many a time a neighbor would stop him to pet him and pick him up and bring him home. And boy or boy did he love his food, that is one thing he did not like to share, he would make sure to eat first before the cats got to the food, he was the boss of the house.

We miss him terribly but he is in doggy heaven with Bud, and I am sure they are having a great time.
